Rocket Flames go 4-2 in a very warm "Warm up" tourney

Pictures from Day 2
Pictures from Day 1
Rocket Flames – 95/Classics (Gilliam): 23-19

In the first game of the weekend, the girls started slowly as they usually do when the game starts early in the morning. Fortunately, buckets were not falling in for both teams, the first half ending with a low score (8-4) for the Classics.

The girls had 10 turnovers in the half, some of them breaking the press or just making bad passes.

The second half showed a great defensive effort lead by Babette (6 steals) and Sydney (5 steals). Kelly, Janel, Danielle and Maddy had two steals apiece.

This tem effort was capped by taking care of the ball (only 5 turnovers) and great hustle in the backcourt, lead by 4 rebounds by Quinn and four offensive rebounds by Sydney.

Adjowa lead the team in scoring with 8 points, followed by Sydney with 5 and Babette with 4. Cameron, Danielle and Kelly added 2 points.

Rocket Flames – U10 Fairfax Stars : 33-61

This was a shooting game for the Stars, who overwhelmed the girls with their speed and their full court pressure. “We were trying to play at their speed, like chasing a horse” said Coach Tony. The first half went 38-15 for the Virginia team, who had three former Team Sol girls in their roster.

In the second half, the girls played with more patience, and the partial score (23-18 still for the Stars) showed a big improvement. The girls had 25 turnovers, overall.

Adjowa had 11 points, followed by Sydney (6), Quinn and Danielle 3, while Cameron, Babette and Kelly had 2 apiece. The Free throws were pretty good, converting 10 out of 16 (62.5%).

Rocket Flames – Annandale : 26-35

This was a tough pill to swallow for the Rocket Flames. They played a team that didn’t look superior but played better basketball and took the win. The shooting was very poor in the first half, scoring only six points, including 11 free throws missed, that would have made the difference.

In the second half, the team had their first intentional foul (by Babette) which was followed by two technical fouls against Annandale’s bench and coach. ABGC missed their free throws but Meghan converted the four free throws to get the girls close by 5 points. Annandale was able to find the basket many times and kept the Rocket Flames within 7 points most of the second half.

Sydney lead the scorers with 8 points, followed by Adjowa (5) , Meghan 4 (4 of 6 FTs). Jasmine, Danielle, Madeline and Quinn added 2.

Day 2: 3 Wins for the Rocket Flames

Rocket Flames – Classics (Haywood): 40-38

On Sunday, the weather was better, rainy and cooler during the morning. The girls were fired up, taking an early lead 9-2 with a nice ball movement against the full court pressure. A couple of times Kelly and Cameron moved the ball to find Babette open, and Babette would assist Sydney for an easy layup.

But the Classics (current Div II reigning champions) didn’t give up and reduced the difference with very nice outside shooting.

Then, this was the game for Cameron to shine in defense. She had five steals and one block. Maddi and Babette also played great D, while Janel (4 rebounds) and Sydney (10) were very strong on the boards.

Adjowa showed a real hustle guarding one of the Classics fastest players and Maddi, Cameron and Danielle asphyxiating their guards.

Celebrating the second win over the Classics on Sunday morning!

The key for the girls’ victory was the ball handling, though. The girls committed only 6 turnovers and played great D, against a team that has speed and good mid-range shooting.

Sydney scored career-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, followed by Jasmine (5), Adjowa (4), Cameron and Danielle (3), Babette and Quinn (2) and Janel (1).

In this game, the Rocket Flames showed how homogeneous the group is. Adjowa, Babette and Danielle fouled out in the second half, but the girls kept playing at the same level.

Rocket Flames- Fencor: 38-36

The Rocket Flames faced the U10 Fencor national team from Pennsylvania. Fencor, a very good team, very well coached, played a great game and lead by 4-6 points for most of the game, until a good outside shooting from Janel (2 consecutive three pointers) and a long shot from Jasmine tied the game.

Game vs Fencor

Quinn also had a great game offensively, scoring 10 points (5 of 5 shooting) as well as Babette (8 Points). Kelly and Babette played great D, each one collecting 3 steals.

Quinn lead the scoring with 10 points, followed by Janel and Babette with 8. Sydney, Danielle and Jasmine had 3 points, Adjowa had 2 and Kelly had 1. Sydney lead the rebounding with 4, while Adjowa had 3.

Rocket Flames- Vogues: 29-23

The Rocket Flames did what they needed to do against the fast Vogues team. This was the game for Maddi, Kelly and Danielle to excel on Defense. Struggling again in the first half (7-16) the girls played a suffocating defense in the second half to get their third win on Sunday and finish the weekend with a 4-2 record.

Adjowa lead the scoring with 8, followed by Kelly (6), Danielle (5). Jasmine, Cameron, Babette, Sydney and Janel had 1 bucket each.

Again, taking care of the ball was crucial. The girls had only 7 turnovers while had 19 steals (team record) to finish a very good weekend.

In summary, the weekend showed all players contributing to the team effort, either on defense, ball handling and/or offense. The girls are more poised attacking the full court press and moving the ball against the zone defense. On Defense, each game, a different group of players stepped it to the plate. As coach White said “Defense wins games!”.

It was 168 minutes of good basketball (six games!). There were only two 10-second violations, and a lot of very good offensive moves. Defense was superb when it was most needed….Nice work, everybody!

Thanks

Thanks for all the parents who endured a hot and humid long weekend at the Capiltal Sports Center in District Heights, MD.

Special thanks to John Brophy (Quinn’s grandpa) who treated most of the team (and parents) for lunch at Applebee’s on Saturday. We literally had the whole enchilada…And Jonell White to did the same to the team on Sunday at Ledo’s, after the victory over the Classics.

Also thanks to the parents who ran the clock/scoresheet (Ardis and Tami) and the rest of the parent for all the support. Without them, this wouldn’t be possible.
